A Guide to Deck Railings

Railings are an important part of your deck when it comes to safety, but they can add so much elegance and beauty to your outdoor space as well! Choosing a specific railing system is exciting because there are so many options of material, size and style available. If you are trying to decide what kind of railing is right for your deck, this article is for you. Here is a quick guide to railings and the types that we install.

What Makes up a Deck Railing?

Most railing systems consist of these different parts:

-Railing: This is known as the handrail or top rail. Railing spans between vertical posts and is made in a design that is easy for hands to grasp. More modern handrails may be square and simple. Or if you love hosting, you can get handrail that is flat for holding glasses and drinks.

-Bottom rail: This runs parallel to the top rail. The bottoms of the balusters rest on the bottom rail. It is often smaller and less noticeable than the top rail.

-Balusters: These can be an expression of your own unique style! Balusters make up the bulk of your handrail system, filling in between your posts. Balusters can be traditional vertical, horizontal, cable rail, mesh panels, or even glass panels to allow for an uninterrupted view.

-Vertical posts: These give the support for rails, horizontal balusters, or infill panels.

-Post caps: All railing systems have matching caps for vertical posts. Choose from traditional or unique styles of caps!

What are Types of Railing Systems?

Aluminum railing- This type of handrail is what we recommend most highly to our clients. Aluminum is naturally strong and durable. It will not rust (a step up from steel railing systems), splinter or warp. It is lightweight and easier to install than other systems. Aluminum railing comes in many elegant colors and styles.

Composite railing- Similar to composite decking, this type of railing is made of composite material that doesn’t need stained and does not warp, splinter, peel, or fade. This type of railing is perfect for those who prefer a natural wood look but still do not want the maintenance that natural wood requires.

Vinyl railing- Vinyl railing is a bit more budget friendly while still remaining a low maintenance option. Vinyl railing is available mainly in the color white, but with multiple styles to choose from.

Wood railing- Wood railing is made of the same material as your deck (often pressure treated lumber or cedar). Wood railing requires regular staining and sealing to last. Despite this, it is a beautiful option for those who love a natural timber look. As a decking company, we only install cedar wood handrail. Pressure treated handrail warps and splinters badly in the sun as the chemicals in the lumber dry out. Most clients are unhappy with pressure treated wood handrail in the long term.
