What are the Benefits of Aluminum Railing?

Aluminum railing systems are growing in popularity and maybe you are wondering what all the hype is about. We say it many times but when making a large investment in a deck, you certainly want a railing system that will stand the test of time… and the elements. What makes aluminum railing so great and how does it compare with other railing systems such as wood, steel, and vinyl?

Let’s begin with why aluminum railing is a fantastic choice for deck owners.

Strength

Aluminum is a very versatile metal. It is used in everyday items such as aluminum foil and aluminum cans. In these forms, aluminum is thin and bendable. However, aluminum is also used in manufacturing large heavy-duty items such as buildings, bridges, trailers, and fences. What causes aluminum to be such an ideal material to use is its strength to weight ratio. Aluminum is very strong while also lightweight (and uncommon pairing).

Lightweight

Along the lines of the above paragraph, aluminum is more convenient for homeowners and builders to use because it is lightweight. If you are the do-it-yourself type, aluminum railing systems are relatively easy to install since they are not difficult to move and handle.

Style

Aluminum railing systems aren’t only great because of the type of material they’re made of. Aluminum railing comes in a large selection of styles, colors, and finishes. It is modern, clean, and elegant to suit even the most elaborate deck design. Aluminum railing that has a powder coating is a more durable option, so be sure to consider that when choosing your style and color.

Low Maintenance

Are you excited to install a railing system that does not require lots of maintenance? Aluminum railings do not need to be painted, stained, or sealed. The powder coating keeps the aluminum protected and looking like new. Simply wipe and hose down your aluminum railing every so often if you are concerned about keeping it clean.

Durability

Aluminum may be most known for its ability to withstand rust. It also resists decay, insects, and corrosion. Aluminum can withstand extremely high and low temperatures without weakening. If you are looking for a railing that can hold up to the elements, aluminum is probably the best option available to date.

So… are there any cons to having aluminum railing? The only possible downside would be that it is a more expensive railing option. However, while it is more expensive than other railing options it will also outperform them.

To wrap things up, let’s quickly look at how aluminum railing compares to other railing systems.

Aluminum vs. Steel- Steel railing systems must be maintained by being painted every few years to keep them from rusting. Steel weighs much more and is less flexible than aluminum which makes installation harder. A deck must be framed specifically to support the weight of steel railing and additional tools may be needed to adjust during steel railing installation since it is stiff and hard to maneuver.

Aluminum vs. Wood- Wood is likely to rot and must be stained/sealed to last. Over time wood takes a beating from the elements (especially in extreme climates) and may become a safety hazard if regular inspections and maintenance are not performed.

Aluminum vs. Vinyl- Vinyl will shrink and expand during periods of very hot or freezing temperatures. Additionally, vinyl might fade or crack from constant sun exposure. On the other hand, aluminum undergoes almost no change during extreme temperatures and is highly resistant to sunlight.
