Composite Decking Misconceptions

With the popularity of composite and PVC decking on the rise, it isn’t any wonder that a lot of people have some misconceptions about it. There is a lot of new information circulating, but not everyone enjoys researching the facts. Some of the following misconceptions might be based on misinformation, outdated products, past experiences with poor quality material or incorrect installation, simple hearsay, and more. Whatever the reasons behind the misconceptions, let’s get them cleared up for anyone considering a new low maintenance deck!

Misconception #1- Composite/PVC decking requires zero maintenance.

Composite and PVC decking are considered low maintenance, but there is no product that can claim to be no maintenance. While composite and PVC decking will last for decades without any need to sand, seal, and stain like traditional wood, it is still recommended that you sweep low maintenance decking regularly to clear debris from between boards and gently wash it with mild soap and water a couple of times a year.

Misconception #2- Composite decking looks and feels like plastic.

The truth is that in its early years on the market, composite decking did look and feel like plastic. However, we are excited to say that this is no longer the case when purchasing from reputable composite manufacturers such as Fiberon and TimberTech (and some others). These brands have come a long way in developing elite products that mimic the look and texture of natural wood. Additionally, high quality composite/PVC decking will not get as hot as plastic, shrink, fade, or warp in the sun.

Misconception #3- All composite decking is luxury-priced.

We must be transparent and say that composite is indeed an investment. Most quality composite decking is priced higher than traditional wood and will have more of an upfront cost. However, this initial cost is made up over the life of a composite deck by less money spent in maintenance. For families wanting quality composite that is a bit more budget friendly, we can happily say that Fiberon now offers a Good Life collection of composite decking that is priced similarly to wood and still offers an impressive 25 year warranty.  Always be willing to talk to your contractor about your budget! With more and more options available, composite is becoming more affordable and there is a good chance your contractor will be able to help you find a low maintenance decking that fits within your budget.

Misconception #4- All brands of composite decking are eco-friendly.

If helping the environment is important to you, be sure to do your research to find out which composite decking brand is right for you. Not all brands have developed their products to be eco-friendly, although many are. We recommend starting your research with Fiberon decking, one of the most economically friendly manufacturers in the market. Fiberon proudly uses 95% recycled materials, a higher percentage than most (if not all) competitive brands.

Misconception #5- Composite decking sags and warps.

Composite decking that warps and sags is a direct result of incorrect installation. Composite requires certain joist spacing (if you are unfamiliar with joist spacing, you can refer to our article about joist spacing for composite decking) that is narrow enough to prevent boards sagging in between. When composite is installed on joists that are spaced too far apart, sagging becomes evident.

Warping composite boards are a result of installing composite boards without leaving gaps for expansion and contraction in extreme temperatures. When composite boards are installed correctly with adequate gaps, correct joist spacing, and proper fasteners, warping and sagging are never problems.

In conclusion, many of the misconceptions about modern composite decking have been a result of the drawbacks experienced in the early years of its development. If you are interested in having a low maintenance deck but have some concerns based on things you have heard, be willing to do some research on reputable manufacturers!
